Through it, he dug voraciously through records and files and found his history, his birth family—and the ultimate disappointment as some family members embrace him, but others reject him.

    An unbelievable testimony of survival. I sobbed through every misery this poor man and his siblings encountered. "The System" is not much better now than when they went through this living Hell, still hearing horror stories from case workers whose hands are tied or whose case histories are ignored ! That Steve could eventually overcome his past to have a loving future is A Miracle from God, and he deserves every second of it! My heart goes out to his brothers and his sister for their ongoing struggles. This story is tugging at my heart still and it has been awhile since I finished it!

    I heard Mr. Pemberton speak at a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on the University of Missouri St Louis campus and I had a hard time believing the brief story that came from his lips and the depth of his interpretation of Dr. King. He mentioned that he had written a memoire, so I went home and bought it. I read it straight through - it is masterfully written. I spent two years of my youth as a ward of the state, but I never experienced the trials of Mr. Pemberton. His ability to see a future life for himself as a small abandoned boy is indescribable - yet he describes it. He tells us he currently struggles - who from such a background would not - and I wish him well. At the core of his life, he has converted his hellacious upbringing into a life of love and family. It has been a gift to read this book. - You’ll need tissues.

    This is the most powerful story I've ever encountered. It is so beautifully and brilliantly narrated...and so intensely personal and profoundly moving it reduced me to tears. A brilliant testament to the strength of the human spirit. Bravo!!!
